About Lawren E.I. Wowk
Lawren Wowk is one of Canada’s leading family lawyers, recognized in 2024 as one of Canada’s Top 50 Lawyers and a Member of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. As Partner and Head of the Family Law and Children Services Department at Grey Wowk Spencer LLP, Lawren is known for his practical advice, strategic advocacy, and compassionate approach to helping families navigate some of life’s most challenging transitions. He is also a trained Family Law Mediator, offering clients an alternative path to resolving disputes through respectful, child-focused mediation.
Lawren’s practice focuses primarily on family law, mediation, and Children Services matters. Called to the Alberta Bar in 2008, he is admitted to practise in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Biology from St. Francis Xavier University before obtaining his Bachelor of Laws from Cardiff College of Law at the University of Wales. He is also a lifetime member of Gray’s Inn in London, England, and completed his Canadian law equivalency studies through the University of Saskatchewan.
Originally from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Lawren grew up playing competitive hockey and baseball, experiences that earned him opportunities to compete in provincial championships and the BC Best Ever Program. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier University, he moved to St. Paul, Alberta, where he began his career as a teacher while coaching competitive hockey. His passion for mentorship, leadership, and helping others continues to shape the way he practises law today.
In 2002, Lawren and his wife relocated to Cardiff, Wales, where he pursued his legal education before returning to Canada to article with Grey Munday LLP in Cold Lake. Since joining the firm, he has played an instrumental role in its continued growth and evolution into Grey Wowk Spencer LLP. In 2021, he led the firm’s expansion into Edmonton, strengthening its ability to serve clients throughout Alberta.
In 2024, Lawren completed advanced mediation training through Mosten Guthrie, allowing Grey Wowk Spencer LLP to expand its family mediation services. His mediation practice helps families resolve disputes involving separation, divorce, parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, and property division. By focusing on communication, collaboration, and child-centred solutions, Lawren helps clients reach practical agreements while reducing conflict and avoiding unnecessary litigation.
Outside the office, Lawren is deeply committed to his community. He and his family are annual participants in the CIBC Run for the Cure, and he has spent many years coaching youth soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and hockey in Cold Lake. As a former Vice President of Hockey Operations for Cold Lake Minor Hockey and a Hockey Alberta Coach Facilitator, he has dedicated countless hours to developing young athletes, mentoring coaches, and creating positive experiences for families throughout the province.
When he’s not practising law, Lawren enjoys spending time with his family, staying active through weight training, horseback riding, hockey, dirt biking, quadding, sledding, and reading.
